How can a lawyer remain a strategist in a world of constant change, and how can businesses make considered decisions amid uncertainty? In this interview with Anna Savchenko, Partner, Head of Legal at Smartsolutions, and attorney-at-law, we discuss the role of strategic thinking in the legal profession, the challenges created by artificial intelligence, trust as the foundation of an effective team, professional reputation, and the principles that help build long-term relationships with clients and partners.
Strategic Thinking and the Future of the Legal Profession
Businesses today operate amid constant turbulence. In your view, is a good lawyer defined more by knowledge or by strategic thinking? And which skills, beyond legal expertise, have become critical?
There must be synergy and balance: knowledge alone will not take you far, but neither will you get far without it. Today, a lawyer is not merely a specialist who knows how to analyse legislation, but a strategic partner to the business. It is important to understand how the business operates and where it is heading, to adapt to change, and to make decisions quickly.
Is AI more of an assistant to you, or is it already a genuine challenge to the profession?
I believe it is a genuine challenge not only to the profession, but to humanity as a whole. AI is already changing how we work and access information. It can become a powerful tool for development and greater efficiency, but it can also become an obstacle if people do not learn to use it properly, assess its output critically, and retain the ability to think independently.
Leadership, Reputation, and Crisis Management
Are you more focused on control or on trust in the process? How does this show in your work with the team and with clients?
I am more focused on trust. I was taught to trust people, and when I follow that principle, things work out. In my work, I rely on expertise, experience, and knowledge – both my own and my colleagues’. That is where synergy emerges and the best solutions are found.
Have there been situations where a decision had to be made within minutes? At moments like that, do you rely more on intuition or on cool-headed calculation?
More on cool-headed calculation: first, I am a lawyer; second, I am a Virgo – so I prefer decisions that are careful and well considered.
What does professional reputation mean to Smartsolutions, and how do you avoid losing it in a crisis?
It means remaining open and honest while preserving a partnership-based approach: not looking for someone to blame, but looking for a solution that maintains trust and long-term relationships.
Values, Motivation, and Personality
What motivates you most today: complex cases, ambitious challenges, or strong people around you?
I have always been inspired by people – their stories, challenges, and life experience.
If not law, where would we see Anna Savchenko today?
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an interpreter at international negotiations. I imagined travelling abroad with a small suitcase and wearing high heels… If you asked me now, I could easily picture myself owning a small family-run cafe by the ocean.
Which experience, book, or person has had the greatest influence on your professional thinking?
My professional thinking was shaped not by one specific factor, but by a combination of working with businesses and people. Over time, I came to understand that law is not only about rules and legislation. Above all, it is about seeing the broader context, understanding the client’s real needs, and finding the most effective solutions.
Which professional principle would you never compromise?
I would never conceal risks from a client or mislead them. I believe professional reputation is built on honesty and accountability for the outcome.
